[clarke knows she shouldn't be surprised by his words but she still is regardless and she almost feels herself crying again which makes it a very good thing that this is text]
[ he's only had one other person look out for him aside from himself, and that has always been octavia. to have clarke be at his back and watching it diligently — it's not a surprise to him, given what he knows about her, but it's not something he's come to necessarily take for granted. it's still startling in its own way. ]
